Girl By Jamaica Kincaid

http://www.my-island-jamaica.com/girl_by_jamaica_kincaid.html

Girl Questions

This is literature and it is up for interpretation. There’s not just one right answer.
  1. How would you read "Girl" differently if it were titled "Mom?"
  2. What would the text look like if Girl did most of the talking?
  3. If the girl in "Girl" were a boy, what would Mom be telling him? What if Dad were talking instead?
  4. The girl in "Girl" seems caught up in a complicated culture that keeps going on from generation to generation. Is there any way for girl to break that cycle?
  5. Why is Mom so obsessed with her daughter's sexuality? Can you see parallels in today’s world?
  6. Are there any benefits to the lessons Mom is teaching Girl?
  7. What kind of upbringing do you think Mom had? Is she speaking from her own experience, or are these rules that her own Mom taught her?
  8. Research the author's biographical information. How could her upbringing have influenced this story/poem? Is it likely autobiographical? How do you know?
  9. Is this a story or a poem? What do you think?

Raymund's Run Activity

Join up with 1-2 other students. Discuss these questions and answer them orally and write down only the question number and the text evidence which supports your answer. Everyone should have a chance to talk about every question.

At the beginning of the story, what does the narrator reveal about her family and her own responsibility in the family?  How does she feel about this responsibility?   Cite evidence to support your answer.
What does the narrator Squeaky value as her two greatest traits?  Cite evidence to support your answer.
Who challenges Squeaky in the first paragraph?  How does Squeaky respond?
Squeaky doesn’t think that girls can really be true friends.  Cite proof of this.
What piece of dialogue best demonstrates how protective Squeaky is of Raymond?
How does Squeaky’s perspective of the May Pole dancing differ from her mother’s point of view?  Give proof from the text to support your answer.
A conflict occurs between Mr. Pearson and Squeaky.  Explain what the conflict was about and how it is resolved. What does this tell us about Squeaky’s character?
Use specific story details.
Squeaky notices what others are doing just before the race starts.  How do their actions affect her?
What does Squeaky notice about Raymond during the race?  How does she react?

Ancient Greece Assignment

Students Will Be Able To
  • research and present on topics in Ancient Greece with details, quotes, information and examples.
  • Present with confident tone and posture
  • Use media to enhance their presentation

In your group of 3, you are going to teach the class about one aspect of life in Ancient Greece.

At the end of all presentations, we will have a quiz on the content, so you must write two quiz questions based on your presentation. Open-ended questions are better. No multiple choice.

  • Prepare a visual slideshow or other active presentation  3-7 minutes long
  • Practice your presentation and have good stage presence (eye contact, vocal tone)
  • Submit two assessment questions to Ms. Alexander on your presentation
